A New Devotional

KEVIN UMAÑA
A New Devotional
January 7 - February 6, 2022

Two artists who have followed each other's work for years will be opening the 2022 program at the Praise Shadows Art Gallery. Crystalle Lacouture and Kevin Umaña developed their practices rooted in memory, abstraction, and colour. A selection of Lacouture works will include her pieces on paper that she creates as a daily ritual, shown alongside Umaña's new ceramic tablets displayed for the first time in Boston.

Crystalle Lacouture's MAMA paintings in gouache and coloured pencil will be presented through 18 pieces showing her diaristic practice. As she explained, they were "created with the intention of offering protection to my ill mother and all other mothers facing difficulty during the pandemic." She used Score Keeper shooting targets as a canvas, transforming them from a material destined for destruction to one that radiates energy.

Umaña's exhibited pieces resemble tablets that record memory and time. Made of ceramics with bold colours, shapes, and texture, they remain open-ended and can provoke various interpretations, allowing viewers to draw from their associations and experiences.

The exhibition A New Devotional will be on view at the Praise Shadows Art Gallery in Brookline from January 7th until February 6th, 2022. The artists will be present in the gallery for the opening reception on January 7th from 6 to 8 pm.
